What is the meaning of Tanhaiya? (Tanhaiyaan Meaning)
In Sikhism, those who commit religious misconduct are called Tankhaiya. This is announced by the highest institution of the Sikh sect. If anyone in Sikhism commits a religious wrong, then a system has been made for him that he can go to the nearby Sikh Sangat and apologize for his mistakes. After this, the Sangat will review the mistakes of the culprit on the basis of Guru Granth Sahib and the culprit will be punished accordingly.
Tankhiya means the one who is expelled from Sikhism. In common parlance, it means stopping hookah-paani. In this punishment, no kind of contact is maintained with the culprit. He is completely boycotted.
What kind of punishment is given in Tankhaiya?
According to Sikh belief, the Sikh congregation does not take a strict stance regarding forgiveness. In this, the guilty should avoid arguments. Basically, in Tankhaiya, one has to do service as punishment, which he does with his own hands. After the announcement of Tankhaiya, if someone wants forgiveness, then his punishment is announced. As a punishment, the guilty has to go to Harmindar Sahib and clean shoes for a week.
The punishment is called serving a service. After the punishment is over, the Tankhiya is removed from the convict. In Tankhiya, the convict is given the punishment according to the crime he committed. Where to give the punishment, how to give it, all this is decided in the Gurdwara itself.
