India’s Biggest Flop Film: Making multi-starrer films in Bollywood has been like a guarantee of success. There was a time in Hindi cinema when most of the multi-starrer films were made and all of them were successful at the box office. But during this period, there was a film in which not one, not two, not three… but 6 superstars were seen together. At the same time, big personalities were also cast in supporting role characters. But still this film was a disaster at the box office.

This film was ‘The Burning Train’ released in 1980. The film was based on a train named Super Express, which goes from Delhi to Mumbai but it catches fire in the very beginning. Six superstars Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Vinod Khanna, Jeetendra, Parveen Babi and Neetu Kapoor were seen together in ‘The Burning Train’. Earlier, Amitabh Bachchan was also offered this film but he had withdrawn from it.

So many stars, yet it flopped!
Many well-known personalities including Vinod Mehra, Danny Denzongpa, Naveen Nischal, Simi Garewal, Asha Sachdev, Nazir Hussain, Iftikhar, Jagdish Raj, Mac Mohan, Ranjeet and Asrani were seen as supporting artists in ‘The Burning Train’. This multi-starrer film was made in 5 years at a cost of Rs 25-30 crores. But this film with a duration of more than three hours could earn only Rs 6.5 crore at the box office and proved to be the biggest flop.

The government had suffered huge losses
The film ‘The Burning Train’, directed by Ravi Chopra, was shot in a real train and the real train itself was set on fire. If DNA is to be believed, it is said that Ravi Chopra had rented a train from the Indian government for the film. Because the train had to be set on fire, the train and other railway properties had to suffer losses worth crores of rupees during the shooting. After which the government had also asked Ravi Chopra to compensate. However, due to the film being a flop, the director was already burdened with debt. That is why he flatly refused to compensate.
