How long can a person stay without sleeping? The answer to this question may take years for the people of India to get. It is said that Arjun, the character of Mahabharata, never slept and that is why he was named Jitendra. But what is the answer to this question in the Guinness Book of World Records today? Till recently, it was only 11 days. But a YouTuber has broken this record.
YouTuber Norm’s viral stream showed the 19-year-old star waking up from his sleep while police kept a close watch on him. During the 12-day long period, Norm’s fans called authorities to visit him due to concerns over his health.
When he broke the record with 264 hours and 24 minutes, Norm had 9000 viewers on YouTube’s alternative platform ‘Rumble’. At the end of the 12 days, ambulances and police cars were parked on the streets outside his house, where Norm was “competing” with friends.

The previous record for staying awake without sleep was held by a man named Randy Gardner, who stayed awake for 11 consecutive days in 1964 at the age of 17. Randy reportedly experienced hallucinations and extreme confusion during his attempt, while scientists recorded his every move.
Since Randy set the record, two other people have stayed awake for more than 400 hours: McDonald and Maureen Weston, but Guinness does not recognize the attempt. All previous record attempts had medical professionals present to monitor them. Norm did not, leading to concerns about his health.
After just 24 hours of sleep deprivation, people experience impaired co-ordination, memory and judgement. Extend this to 36 and your physical health begins to suffer, with heart rate and blood pressure increasing as the body tries to keep you alert. According to health professional Dr Drerup, after two days of sleep deprivation, the body begins to go “offline”.
