Everything in the world is at risk from pollution. Even scientists are making every effort to protect ancient historical sites and buildings from the threat of air and water pollution. But what would you say when you came to know that scientists have found microplastic in the soil during the excavation of an ancient site, which is a dangerous pollutant in today’s world. This is being considered a big alarm bell for the world.
Obviously, the presence of fine things in the soil clearly means that even the ancient heritages buried in the soil of our world are not free from danger due to pollution. Due to this, we will have to work afresh on the conservation of our archaeological treasures.
Researchers at York University have found microplastics in soil samples from the 1st to 2nd AD. These samples were extracted from layers of depth of more than 23 feet i.e. 7 meters. This investigation has challenged the notion that buried, hidden deposits in ancient sites remain safe and intact.
In a study published in Science of Total Environment, researchers have found not just one but 16 different types of microplastic polymers in the soil of today and ancient times. Microplastics are less than 5 millimeters in size and are formed by breaking down from larger plastics. Scientists say that these pieces were used in beauty products around 2020.
In recent years, the increasing threat of microplastics is becoming a matter of concern for scientists all over the world. It is being proven many times that microplastics are reaching sea creatures and then into the bloodstream of humans. But this is the first time that it has been found that they have access to the soil of a buried archaeological site.
The study clearly indicates that the presence of microplastics in this way can bring radical changes in archaeology. Contamination of archaeological sites with microplastics will clearly reduce their scientific importance and now a major change in conservation methods will have to be made.
