There are 72 seasons in a year
Generally speaking, Japan’s calendar has the same four seasons as the rest of the world. These seasons are divided into 6 parts, which together make 24 Sekki. This Sekki i.e. sub-season is 15 days long. These Sekki are also divided into 3 ‘Ko’ and thus a total of 72 ‘Ko’ are made. ‘Ko’ i.e. microseason lasts for a total of 5 days, which gives the climate of Japan a musical rhythm. These depict natural events like ripening of wheat, sprouting, planting of crops, blooming of flowers.

How were the small seasons formed?
It is believed that these small seasons of Japan were taken from Central Korea in the sixth century. Their names were taken from the climate in northern China, which was adapted to the Japanese climate by an astronomer named Shibukawa Shunkai in 1685. This changed calendar continued to be used till 1873. However, during modernization, the Meiji government replaced this traditional calendar with the Gregorian i.e. Western calendar. Still, in some rural areas and among farmers and fishermen, only the old calendar with 72 seasons is valid.

Who are these micro seasons?
The 24 ‘sekki’ seasons of Japan are – Rishun, Usui, Kechitsu, Shunbun, Seimei, Koku, Rikka, Shomon, Boshu, Geshi, Shosho (low heat), Taisho, Risshu, Shosho (hotter than before), Hakuro, Shubun, Kanro, Soko, Ritto, Shoshetsu, Taisetsu, Toji, Shokan, Daikan. By dividing these 24 seasons into 3 parts each, a total of 72 seasons are made.
