From that time till now it has remained a mystery. Many forensic and radiocarbon tests have been done in Roopkund pond. According to scientists, these skeletons are at least 12000 years old. No one knows where these skeletons came from.

There is a folk tale about this pond that these are the skeletons of King Jasdhaval of Hell-Kannauj, his pregnant wife and all his servants. Those who had come out to visit Nanda Devi, but all of them died due to the storm and now they have become skeletons.
