A city in Britain was once famous for its copper industry. Now one of the most deprived areas of the country. The situation is such that dozens of people live here in tents and temporary cabins. Police in the Cornish town of Camborne now have uniformed bouncers guarding it, following complaints from locals about hooliganism, beggars and rampant drug use. Urban explorer Joe Fish points out that for a time, this area of Cornwall was one of the richest places in the whole world and is now one of the most deprived in all of Europe.
Joe estimates that 20 to 30 percent of the shops on the High Street have closed and those that remain are in disrepair or poor condition. Empty beer cans, discarded takeaway wrappers and other types of garbage can be seen on every street.
Just off the high street is an alleyway strewn with drug paraphernalia. This area of Cornwall was receiving payments from the European Union to tackle the poverty crisis. It was one of only four areas of the United Kingdom that were eligible for these payments. But of course since Brexit the subsidies have gone and the city is really struggling.

Some of Camborne’s homeless people are housed in an old Salvation Army hotel, others in a fenced-in area of makeshift cabins, and still most are barely surviving in an improvised tent city in a local churchyard . The local council is unable to help many families and has left them to fend for themselves.
While the decline of local industry has clearly contributed to the lack of employment opportunities for young people in the area, there are many derelict buildings that could be repurposed to house the homeless. Instead the council has created a temporary solution by fencing off the area of one of the city’s long-term car parks. But this has created a hotbed of crime and problems within the area.
