Pitambari is made on a large scale in Patwa Toli and Shivcharan Lane of Manpur, known as Mini Manchester of Bihar. Gayaji is not only the place of salvation of ancestors in the whole world, but there are also many industries here which give national and state level recognition. Patwa Toli is the only place in Bihar that makes Pitambari. The Pitambari here has been supporting the people of Bihar as well as Jharkhand and West Bengal in their last journey of life.

Tanti community maintains tradition
Only 2-3 people are left in the Patwa group who are involved in the work of making Pitambari from handloom. Rest of the clothes are now made using power loom only. Till a few years ago, 30-40 people used to make Pitambari using handloom. People are moving away from it due to more hard work and less profits. Here there are some people of Tanti community who are handling the work of making Pitambari. It takes two days to make one Pitambari and costs Rs 3. It is sold at a wholesale price of Rs 6. Weavers save Rs 3.

That’s not the case in power loom pitambari
Here Pitambari is also prepared using power loom but its quality is less as compared to handloom. The Pitambari prepared here is sent to Bihar, Jharkhand, Bengal and Odisha. Satyendra Kumar Paan, a weaver associated with the business of Pitambari, says that only a few people make Pitambari from handloom. The government is not paying attention to handloom. We don’t even get a loan. That’s why we are not able to expand this business. This business earns a daily income of Rs 300-400.

In this locality of Gaya, apart from handloom, the work of making only Pitambari has been going on for decades on more than two hundred power loom machines. On an average, one and a half lakh pieces of Pitambari are being made every month on these machines. These are of cotton, polyester and Khadriya quality. Its price ranges from Rs 5 to Rs 50 per piece in the wholesale market. More than 10 thousand workers are working daily on 12 thousand power looms in Patwa Toli. Apart from these, more than 10 thousand workers belonging to different categories including dyers, thread sorters, cloth polishers are also associated with this industry. More than 25 thousand families are associated with this business and are being supported.
