PNR Number: When you book a train ticket, you get a 10-digit unique number called PNR number. PNR means Passenger Name Record. How is PNR number created?

The PNR number consists of 10 digits in total and can be divided into three parts:

first three digits

The first three digits of the PNR number indicate from which zonal railway your ticket has been issued. Indian Railways is divided into five zonal networks, namely:

1 to 3: It belongs to Northern Railway.

4 to 6: This represents Southern Railway.

7 to 9: This shows the tickets related to Eastern Railway.

This code decides from where your ticket is issued. For example, if you are booking a ticket from Delhi, it will be connected to Northern Railway.

next seven digits

The remaining seven digits contain complete information related to your journey. This is a unique identification number which is generated by the computer system. This number is generated on the basis of date, time and other details at the time of ticket booking.

The PNR number contains the following information related to your travel:

  • Passenger’s name and age.
  • Train number and name.
  • Date and time of travel.
  • Boarding station and destination.
  • Ticket status (Confirmed, Waiting, or RAC).
