Beating Retreat Ceremony

The last part of the Republic Day celebrations in India is the Beating Retreat Ceremony. In fact, there has been a tradition in the army that when a war is going on, a special tune is played in the evening, due to which the soldiers put down their weapons and move away from the battlefield. This entire process is called beating retreat ceremony. This tradition was started by the British in India, which continues even today. In this, all three armies of India participate and march past with a band playing traditional tunes. Through this, in a way, the message is given that the Republic Day celebrations are now over. This is also the official message of sending the armies back to the barracks.

Beating Retreat Ceremony is held in Delhi every 29 January at the conclusion of the Republic Day celebrations. . It is a tradition to organize this ceremony at Vijay Chowk in the evening of that day. During this, the tune of the song Abide With Me was also played first. Politics over this song had intensified since 2020, after which as the controversy increased, this song was removed from the ceremony in 2022. Instead, other songs have been given place in the Beating Retreat Ceremony, which are now played during the marchpast on 29 January.

Who composed it?

Let us tell you about this song. It was composed by Henry Francis. Abide with Me is actually a Christian prayer or hymn, written by Henry Francis of Scotland. When Henry grew up, he became a poet as well as a priest of a class of church called Anglican divines. This song of his, written in 1847, became the most famous.
