In Bihar, watermelon is generally cultivated in the Diara region of river Ganga, but for the last few years, watermelon is being cultivated on a large scale in dry districts like Gaya also. Farmers are also getting good income from watermelon cultivation. Farmer Dharmendra Kumar, resident of Chandauti in Gaya city, has cultivated watermelon in three acres. He is getting an income of Rs 8 to 10 lakh in just 3 months. Dharmendra has planted watermelon of Jannat variety, harvesting of which starts in 60 to 65 days and this crop lasts only for 3 months.

The specialty of Jannat variety of watermelon is that it produces up to 20 tons per acre. It is sweeter to eat than other watermelons. Last year also, Dharmendra had planted watermelons in 10 katthas as a trial. After getting profit in it, he has planted watermelons in 3 acres this year. He had ordered watermelon nursery from Ara and planted it in his fields in the month of February. Up to 10 tonnes of watermelon is being harvested from his fields every third and fourth day. Harvesting will take place till the month of May. Watermelon is being sold in the market at wholesale price of Rs 15 to 20 per kg.

Produce better production with less water
Dharmendra has taken 14 bighas of land on lease in Chandauti of the city and cultivates fruits and vegetables other than watermelon. Dharmendra cultivates melon, cucumber and green vegetables, that too through completely organic methods. He has installed drip irrigation and mulching in his fields. Due to which better production is being done with less water. Apart from Gaya and Kedarnath market, their fruits are being supplied to Nawada and Patna districts.
