So every Tuesday, Nguyen, 79, joins a group of students to study English, her aim being to socialize and keep her brain sharp. The special thing is that Phung Thi Yen, who teaches English, does not take any kind of charge for this. Lok has never studied a foreign language before, but with her newly acquired skills she joins her classmates in chanting in chorus: “You’re never too old to learn English.”
Purpose is to teach elders
Yen, 30, founded the classes four years ago with the aim of giving seniors a place where they can meet, socialize and learn something new. Yen Lok takes time off from her day job to teach English classes and many others. He and his group of volunteers are currently teaching 200 elderly students.
