Regarding science, you must have heard that necessity is the mother of invention. At the same time, experiments have great importance for inventions and in science. You must have heard about and seen many experiments till date. But today we are going to tell you about an experiment which is the longest running experiment in the world.
Experiments in Science
Experiments have great importance in science. . Because without experiments the conclusions of science are considered incomplete. Only on the basis of experiment, a journey can be invented, the benefit of which is available to every person in the world. All the essential resources used by human beings, from lighting in the house to television and internet, have been invented by some scientist in his time after many experiments.
How much does it take to experiment? Is time
In science experiments, an estimate can be made about everything. But no one can tell how long his experiment will last. Because some experiments are completed in a short time, while some experiments take years and even centuries. Similarly, today we are going to tell you about an experiment which has taken more than 100 years.
When did this experiment start
Tell us? That this special experiment was started by Australian physicist Thomas Parnell in the year 1930. During this time he wanted to show the surprising properties of substances used in everyday life. In this experiment, he used a highly sticky tar-like substance called pitch for the pitch drop experiment. In fact, this pitch drop is 100 billion times more viscous than water and two million times more viscous than honey. Although this substance appears to be solid, it is actually liquid. You will be surprised to know that when hit with a hammer, it breaks like glass.
Research was started in 1930
Australian physicist Thomas Parnell started the research. First the pitch was heated and poured into a glass funnel. After this it was left to cool for three years. After which in 1930 he cut off the bottom part of the funnel to allow the pitch to drip slowly. You will be surprised to know that this scientific research is so slow that since then only nine drops have fallen from the funnel. Let us tell you that the head of research Parnell and Professor John Mainstone were never able to see a single drop falling.
Know when the drops fell?
This experiment is in the Guinness Book of World Records. It has been named as the longest scientific experiment ever conducted. In this unique experiment, the first drop fell in 1938, the second in 1946, the third in 1954, the fourth in 1962, the fifth in 1970, the sixth in 1979, the seventh in 1988, the 8th in 2000 and the 9th in 2014. Let us tell you that by 2030 this experiment will complete 100 years.
