When we were told the story of Medusa in childhood, we did not believe it. We used to think that how can it happen that someone can turn someone into stone just by looking at them. Actually, Medusa is a female character in Greek Mythology who is absolutely scary to look at and it is said that whoever she sees once becomes stone. This character has also been depicted in many Hollywood films. But today we are not talking about this character, but about such a lake… in which if any animal or bird goes, it becomes stone. This dangerous lake is also called Medusa Lake or Zombie Lake.
Where is this lake
This mysterious lake is in the country of Tanzania in the continent of Africa. This lake is called Natron Lake by the local people, which is located in Ngorongoro district of Arusha region. As soon as you go near this lake, you will see a huge red colored lake where idols of many animals and birds (their dead bodies which have become like idols) will be seen. This scene looks quite scary, that’s why the local people are afraid to go to that area. These people consider this lake to be cursed.
How do animals and birds become idols
Now coming to the main question…what happens after all who go there Animals and birds become idols. Scientists say that all this is because of the water present in this lake. Actually, the alkaline of the water present in this lake is more than the water of common lakes. Because of this the pH level of this water has been measured up to 10.5.
The reason behind the increased alkaline in the water of this lake is said to be the Doinyo Lengai volcano which is very near to this lake. Lava coming out of this volcano is found in this lake and makes the water dangerously alkaline. It is the only volcano in the world whose lava produces nitrocarbonates. Many such chemicals are found in the water of this lake, which slows down the process of decomposition of dead bodies of animals and birds, which is why these dead bodies look like statues.
