Jaisalmer: Every city is known for its special flavour, and this identity is also reflected in its special food. As soon as we take the name of Mathura, the picture of Mathura Peda comes in our mind. Similarly, Peda of a special shop in Pokaran, Jaisalmer is also famous, which is available only here. The peda of “Pannalal Peda Wala” shop weighs about 150 grams, whereas generally the weight of peda is between 30 to 40 grams. The specialty of this Peda is the special saffron added to it.

This shop was started by Pannalal in 1946. After the struggle, this peda gave him recognition, after which he also named his shop “Pannalal Peda Wala”. Today the fourth generation of Pannalal is running this shop, and the taste is the same old which Pannalal had discovered.

Use of pure milk and desi ghee
Shop owner Giriraj, 38, says, “My grandfather started this shop. After that my father and then I took over it, and now my nephew is also with me.” He says that to maintain the special taste of Peda, he takes care of many things, like use of traditional kilns, use of cow’s milk and desi ghee.

According to Giriraj, “We pay special attention to the amount of sugar, so that the peda is not excessively sweet. “We use a special kind of saffron, which makes its taste even more delicious.” At this shop, Kesar Peda is being sold for Rs 500 per kg, whereas the price of other sweets in the city is around Rs 400 per kg. Despite this, the shop of “Pannalal Peda Wala” remains crowded with people eating and taking away pedas.

The shop is famous by the name of Pannalal Pedewala.
“We pack about 4 to 5 kg of pedas every day for other cities,” says Madhav Purohit, 24, Pannalal’s grandson. When asked about the spoilage of the peda, he says, “Not even a drop of water is added to this peda, hence it does not spoil even after being kept in a box for 5 days.” About 77 years ago, a man created sweets in his own way, and his future generations took their time in maintaining that taste. Even today, the sweet made by that person is gaining recognition many kilometers away from the city by the name of “Pannalal Pede Wala”.
