After partition in 1947, thousands of families from Sindh province of Pakistan came and settled in India. This family also brought the flavor of Sindh with itself. One of them is Karachi Halwa. Karachi Halwa being made in Barmer is now being exported to America.

The food of every state, village and street corner of India has its own identity. One of them is Karachi Halwa. This is a Pakistani sweet but after partition it came to India with the people. This halwa, famous by the name of Karachi city of Pakistan, is also made in Barmer bordering Pakistan and is eaten with great gusto. It is made only twice a year. This halwa is very much liked in foreign countries including Barmer. Karachi Halwa is like jelly. The entire process of making it takes about 4-5 hours. After it cools down, its pieces are cut.

Hemraj Khatri’s family, originally living in Amarkot, Sindh, Pakistan, made India their country in the year 1991 and since then, on every festival, a crowd of people come to their house to buy Karachi Halwa. Karachi Halwa is saffron and green in colour. Karachi Halwa from Barmer is being exported to America, Chennai, Mumbai, London, Ahmedabad, Surat, Jaipur and other places.

Karachi Halwa Recipe
According to Hemraj’s son Mukesh Kumar Khatri, the biggest specialty of Karachi Halwa is that it does not spoil for about 6 months. Wheat is soaked in different waters for 8 days, then it is dried and ground. The white cream formed from this is called Nishasta. Karachi Halwa is made by mixing Nishasta, ghee, sugar, cashew nuts, almonds, pistachios and tijara. Mukesh makes three types of Karachi Halwa, in which the one with pistachio is sold for Rs 900 per kg, the one with dry fruits for Rs 650 per kg and the Karachi Halwa with less dry fruits is sold for Rs 450 per kg.
