According to media reports, the public Wi-Fi network of 19 railway stations in the UK including London, Manchester and Birmingham was hacked. As soon as passengers logged in to use public Wi-Fi, they received a message regarding terrorist attacks. Strange security warnings and suspicious pop-ups started appearing in the messages, due to which the passengers got scared. As soon as the officials received information about this, the Wi-Fi network was switched off and the matter started being investigated.
Talent, the company responsible for managing the Wi-Fi system, said the attack, first identified on Wednesday evening, originated from an unauthorized change to a Network Rail landing page using a legitimate Global Reach administrator account. The issue is now under criminal investigation by BTP.
BTP confirmed that it is actively investigating this matter. It said: “We received reports of a cyber attack displaying Islamophobic messages on Network Rail Wi-Fi services at around 5:03pm yesterday (Wednesday). We are working with Network Rail to rapidly investigate this incident.
According to cyber experts, public Wi-Fi is not safe because anyone can easily access the network there. In such a situation, if you are using public Wi-Fi, then do not open any such website from where your personal information can be leaked.
