Potato Farming: India’s agriculture sector is getting stronger. Innovations are also being done in agriculture. To a large extent, the credit for this goes to the farmers, who work hard beyond their capacity and give tremendous production of crops. Meanwhile, some farmers also get named, behind which they have a new thinking. Ram Sharan Verma, a progressive farmer of Barabanki district in Uttar Pradesh, is also one of those farmers, who are proving their mettle in farming. Although Ram Sharam Verma grows many crops including grains, vegetables, fruits, but he has worked to revolutionize the cultivation of tomato, banana, mentha and potato. In this rabi season, Ram Sharan Verma’s technique of growing potatoes in less water is becoming very viral. Let’s know about this new technology which will revolutionize the field of potato production.
There is no damage even due to rain and hail
These days, due to the uncertainties of the weather, there is a huge loss in the crops. Even in UP, many times the potato and wheat crops sown by traditional method get ruined due to rains and hailstorms, but Ram Sharan Verma cultivates potatoes in such a way that rain or storm does not affect his crops. To dodge the weather, Ram Sharan Verma has taken out a new idea instead of traditional farming, with the help of which he has been able to produce potatoes safely for many years. In fact, for the cultivation of potatoes, Ram Sharan Verma makes some big-sized beds, which have drains from each side. The advantage of this is that the potato crop does not get waterlogged when it rains and due to sowing of potato at a height, there is no rotting. With this technique, Ram Sharan Verma is getting production of about 250 to 275 quintals per acre. This new technique was first used by Ram Sharan Verma on 5 December 2019.

farming with this technique
The secret of Ram Sharan Verma’s success is crop rotation. Ram Sharan Verma, after growing banana crop in his field for 14 months, cultivates potato for 90 days in the same field. Hybrid tomato is planted for 120 days after potato crop and Mentha crop is planted for next 90 days after tomato. Low water technology is used to grow potatoes, he named it 56 inch technology. In this technique, up to 30 percent water is saved and 40 percent more production is available. Similarly, staking is used for tomato cultivation, which gives 30 times more yield. While 200 quintals of tomato production is available with normal farming, Ram Sharan Verma has taken 400-500 quintals of production by staking method. Ram Sharan Verma came in discussions some time ago for growing red banana and banana from tissue culture.
