But that boy who grew up in an orphanage worked hard and succeeded in the UPSC exam. Due to his passion, he gave a tough fight to the hardships that were in front of him.

This is the story of Mohammad Ali Shihab, who got 226th rank in 2011 UPSC exam. Shihab’s childhood was spent in a lot of struggle. He was born in a village in Kerala. When he was very young, he used to work with his father at a bamboo basket shop. But a time came when his father’s hand was raised from his head. In the year 1991, Shihab’s father died due to illness. After which the family living in poverty faced more difficulties. Apart from Shihab, he had four other siblings. Due to poverty, his mother sent everyone to an orphanage.

Shihab spent 10 years in an orphanage, where he was known for his intelligence. Although the orphanage is not a formal school, it was still better for Shihab than the life where his family had to work as laborers to earn a living after his father’s death. Shihab has appeared in several exams, including exams for posts like forest department, jail warden and railway ticket examiner. Shihab started preparing for civil services at the age of 25. Despite facing failures, he did not give up and fulfilled his dream of becoming an IAS officer in the third attempt.

English was weak

Mohammad Ali Shihab secured 226th rank in the UPSC exam in 2011. His English was weak, so he had to take the help of a translator in the interview. He scored 201 out of 300 marks. Shihab credits his discipline for his success. With hard work, continuous efforts and discipline, he faced all the challenges and achieved success.
