Valentine’s Day 2023, Hazrat Nizamuddin and Amir Khusro Story: Valentine’s Day is a special day for those in love. Loving couple, loving people, husband and wife all eagerly wait for this day. Every year February 14 is celebrated as Valentine’s Day. But what is the true meaning of love in Indian culture, learn from Amir Khusro.
The great litterateur of Indian history, father of Urdu and Sufi saint Amir Khusro explained the high culmination of love. He told that, love can be done with anyone, love should be soulful and respectable. Similar love was done by Amir Khusro with his Guru Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya. Khusro’s love for the Guru was such that, it came out from the mouth of Hazrat that his grave should also be built near my grave. There is Sufi tomb of Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya in Delhi, which is a holy dargah and in front of it, Amir Khusro’s tomb is made of red stone.
Know the meaning of wonderful Guru love from Khusro
“Khusro is the river of love, it is a reverse edge, the one who emerges, drowns, the one who drowns crosses”
This couplet belongs to Amir Khusro, who had explained the true definition of love about 700 years ago through this couplet. The meaning of this couplet is that, love is such an ocean whose edge is upside down. The one who is separated from this river of love drowns in this Bhavsagar and the one who drowns in this river of love crosses over from this world.
Love is only meant to be shared. When we give love to someone, we automatically get more happiness and love back than that. That’s why instead of desiring to receive love, efforts should be made to share love.
Indian literature is full of stories of Guru Shishya. There are many examples like Amir Khusro-Hazrat Nizamuddin, Kabir-Ramanand, Eklavya-Dronacharya, Vivekananda-Ramakrishna Paramhans. Who showed the purity of love and relationship of Guru-disciple. For the disciple, his Guru is God, in whose love and devotion his life is spent. Khusro also had some similar love devotion for Hazrat.
This is how Khusro won the heart of Hazrat
Once Hazrat Nizamuddin thought that he has many disciples, but who is the true disciple and who loves him the most? For this he thought of testing his disciples. He went to visit Delhi with his 22 disciples. It was night while roaming around and he along with his disciples reached the brothel of a prostitute. He ordered the disciples to stand down and himself went to the top of the brothel. Hazrat said to the prostitute that, arrange food for me from below and get water in a liquor bottle, seeing which my disciples below would think it was a liquor bottle.
In this way, when the bottles of food and liquor from outside started going upstairs to the brothel, all the disciples were stunned. He thought how did this happen? The gurus who teach us to follow the right path are themselves doing such things. Slowly the night started passing but Hazrat was not coming out. In this way, one by one the disciples started returning to their homes. But Khusro did not even move from there.
When Hazrat came down in the morning, he saw that all the disciples had left. Seeing Khusro, Hazrat asked, everyone left, so why did you stay here… why didn’t you run? Didn’t you see that I spent the whole night with the courtesan and also ordered liquor? Amir Khusro said – Everyone went to their respective homes. Even if I run away, where would I go? Where do I find peace except at your feet. My whole life is dedicated at your feet. Hazrat Nizamuddin was very happy to see Khusro’s love and in this way he got his true disciple, whom he blessed.
