Due to breakage of Jalkal pipeline, the road at Sigra intersection, the busiest in the city, caved in. On Monday evening, the road gradually started sinking and within no time a crater about 10 feet deep, 20 feet long and 10 feet wide was formed. This created panic among drivers and traffic was affected. There was a four kilometer long jam on all four roads of the intersection.
Due to damage to the Municipal Corporation’s drinking water pipeline in Sigra area, water was sometimes seen flowing on the road. The water supply department somehow managed to stop the flow of water by making temporary arrangements. But gradually it started having an impact on the road. On Monday, the road leading from the intersection to the Rath Yatra suddenly caved in. Police reached the spot and diverted the traffic by barricading the pit.
After getting the information, Jalkal and PWD teams also reached. Investigation revealed that the soil beneath the road caved in due to pipeline breakage. KK Singh, Executive Engineer of the Public Works Department Provincial Section, said that the road has sunken due to the breaking of the drinking water pipeline.
Talks have been held with the Water Department. Roads cannot be built without repairing pipelines. PWD will temporarily close the pit by filling it with soil, concrete etc.
