Today people find life difficult even in rural areas without amenities, and there a couple tells what it’s like to live in the wilderness for 50 years. Dano and Robin have lived together in a wooden plank house in the Waialua Valley on Molokai, Hawaii since the late 1970s. About 20 miles from the nearest town, and far from traffic lights or big shops, they have perfected their home over the decades and haven’t looked back.
The couple hasn’t watched TV in over 30 years and say they stay away from Google as much as possible. The married couple, who raised four children in the forest, eat plants and animals. From making their own coffee from cocoa beans to killing deer and curing health problems with herbs, everything they use or eat is made using natural resources found in the two acres of land around their home.
American filmmaker Peter Santanello, who has nearly 2.95 million subscribers on his YouTube channel, recently spent the day with the couple and filmed a typical ‘day in the life’ of living off-grid. Dano told Peter, “I didn’t realise how different it is but there are times when I look at Robin and say ‘I haven’t seen another human being in two weeks’ and I don’t even notice it.”
Dano is originally from San Diego. After the video was shared on YouTube, hundreds of people rushed to share their thoughts. One person called his way of life purposeful, while another said it was brilliant. “Wow! This could be my family’s dream come true,” another wrote, while one user confessed, “The world is getting crazier day by day and I feel like at 60 I don’t know how to feed my family and stay alive if we have to.”
