After 24 years, the verdict in the famous Vijay Ikka case of Mathura was pronounced from the court of ADJ-4 Dr. Pallavi on Monday. In the case of custodial death of Vijay Ikka, the then Inspector Narholi (now Highway Police Station) Sunil Kumar Sharma has been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1 lakh. Four other policemen have been acquitted by the court. After sentencing, the court sent Sunil Kumar Sharma to jail.
ADGC Hemendra Bhardwaj said that a robbery incident took place on June 7, 2000 at St. Francis School located in the Highway police station area. Also, the school principal Brother George Cruji was murdered. The incident had created a sensation in Mathura. A case was registered in Narholi (Highway) police station. Sunil Kumar Sharma was inspector at that time. They had taken the school cook, Vijay Ikka, resident of Narholi, into custody for questioning on the basis of suspicion. Meanwhile, Sunil Kumar Sharma resident of Saidpur, Bahadur Nagar, Bulandshahr was suspended due to this incident. Dharamveer was given charge. Vijay Ikka was in police custody. Vijay was taken to the police line by Sunil Kumar Sharma, suspended from the police station.
Vijay Ikka’s body was found hanging in the bathroom of the police line on June 17, 2000. The case of Vijay Ikka’s death in police custody gained momentum. Apart from Sunil Kumar Sharma, in-charge Brother Alphonse, head constable Radheshyam Singh son of Sitaram, sub-inspector Jamil Mohammad Rawat son of Maqsood Ali Rawat, resident of village Gangawali police station Bivinagar Bulandshahr, constable Dinesh Upadhyay son of Rambharose resident of Majtila police station Dauki, Agra and constable clerk Ramanand Yadav. A case was registered in Sadar police station against son Shankar Lal Yadav, resident of Matpura police station Saifai, Etawah. It was first discussed at the police level.
But, later it was sent to CBCID. Apart from Sunil Kumar Sharma, CBCID has filed a separate chargesheet against Head Constable Radheshyam Singh, SI Jamil Mohammad Rawat, Constable Dinesh Upadhyay, Constable Clerk Ramanand Yadav, Inspector Dharamveer Singh, Ajay Kumar Aggarwal, Netrapal Dixit, Sheel Kumar, Vijay Singh, Surendra Singh. Filed on different dates. Dharamveer has died. Apart from this, the court has separated the files of Ajay Kumar Aggarwal, Netrapal Dixit, Sheel Kumar, Vijay Singh, Surendra Singh due to their absence. On Monday, hearing was held on the files of Sunil Kumar Sharma, Radheshyam Singh, Jamil Mohammad Rawat, Dinesh Upadhyay, Ramanand Yadav. On the basis of evidence and testimony, the court found Sunil Kumar Sharma guilty of culpable homicide and sentenced him to 10 years imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1 lakh.
They were acquitted due to lack of evidence
Radheshyam Singh, Zameen Mohammad Rawat, Dinesh Upadhyay and Ramanand Yadav have been acquitted by the court on the basis of evidence and testimony.
Sunil Kumar Sharma had misused his position
According to ADGC, when the school cook was murdered, the then police station in-charge Sunil Kumar Sharma was suspended by the government. Misusing his position, he picked up Cook for questioning from the school despite being suspended.
22 witnesses testified
22 witnesses were produced in the court in the case of custodial death of Vijay Ikka. According to ADGC Hemendra, the testimony of the then DIG Agra, SSP Mathura, City Magistrate Mathura and many other officers was taken in the court. He says that many witnesses in this case had also turned hostile.
The secret of robbery-murder buried forever by FR
The negligence of the police in this much-discussed incident was so great that the secret of the murder and robbery of the school principal remained a secret forever. After investigation, the police lodged an FR in that case. Who had committed that incident? This could never be revealed.
