Types of myositis

  • Dermatomyositis: This involves inflammation of both the skin and the muscles.
  • Polymyositis: This involves inflammation only of the muscles, especially the muscles of the hip, thigh, shoulder, and neck.
  • Inclusion body myositis (IBM): This is a rare type in which muscle inflammation and weakness progress slowly.

Symptoms of myositis

  • Muscle weakness: This is the most common symptom. Initially there is mild weakness which gradually increases.
  • Muscle pain and swelling: There may be pain and swelling in the muscles, which may cause difficulty in walking.
  • Fatigue: You feel more tired than usual.
  • Breathing problems: Sometimes the muscles of the lungs also get swollen, which causes difficulty in breathing.

Causes of myositis
The main causes of myositis can include autoimmune disorders, infections (viral, bacterial, or fungal), and certain medicines. However, in many cases the exact cause is not known.

Treatment of Myositis

  • Medications: Steroids and immunosuppressant drugs are given to control inflammation and the immune system.
  • Physical therapy: Physical therapy is very important to increase muscle strength and flexibility.
  • Exercise: Regular exercise helps reduce muscle weakness and maintain their function.
  • Balanced diet: A nutritious diet, rich in proteins and vitamins, is essential for muscle health.
