Mummigatti, Consultant Orthopedic and Trauma Surgeon, Manipal Hospital, Goa, explains that osteoarthritis occurs as a result of wear and tear of the cartilage (cushion in the joint) in the joint. Whereas rheumatoid arthritis results from an autoimmune process that leads to chronic inflammatory changes in the joint.

Generally, osteoarthritis is seen in the elderly. It mostly affects the weight-bearing joints of the body. The most commonly affected joint is the knee joint and the most common symptom in the patient is pain on the inner border of the knee joint which increases weight bearing capacity. It usually affects the small joints of the hand which may manifest as pain, swelling or deformity. Later other joints may also be involved.

If we look at their disease process, in OA, due to the wear and tear that occurs in the joint, the cartilage gradually becomes thin and can later lead to complete loss of cartilage and the formation of extra bones (osteophytes) along the joint margins. Are going. Here the primary damage occurs in the cartilage.

Due to weak immunity, the antigens present in the joints are considered foreign by the body and the immunity becomes weak.
