Sleep and Diabetes Diabetes is one of the fastest growing diseases these days. There is no cure for it. It can only be managed. Diabetes affects the blood sugar level. High blood sugar level has a negative effect on digestion, heart health, skin, kidney and liver function as well as sleep.
Diabetes patients do not get proper sleep or they wake up frequently. Due to which they are not able to get complete sleep. In such a situation, they have to face many problems. Apart from this, there is also a risk of diabetes due to less sleep.
Lack of sleep increases the risk of diabetes
Research in the Biobank of UK has shown that less sleep is also related to diabetes. This research found that the risk of diabetes was 16% higher in those who slept only 5 hours a day. Whereas the risk of diabetes type 2 was 41% higher in those who slept only 3-4 hours. Research found that if someone sleeps less despite a healthy diet, then the risk of diabetes is higher.
Why does a diabetic patient’s sleep get disturbed?
Type 2 diabetes patients often have sleep problems due to unbalanced blood sugar levels and diabetes-related symptoms. High sugar levels at night (hyperglycemia) and low sugar levels (hypoglycemia) can cause insomnia and fatigue during the day.
Like many other serious diseases, depression and stress related to diabetes do not let you sleep at night. When blood sugar is high, the kidney signals to urinate frequently. Due to which one has to get up frequently and sleep gets disturbed. Apart from this, high blood sugar can cause headache, excessive thirst and fatigue, due to which one is unable to sleep properly.
Poor sleep makes diabetes more serious
Lack of sleep causes hormonal imbalance. Due to which eating habits also deteriorate. It also has a negative effect on weight. After lack of sleep or sleeping for a short time, a person eats more food, so that he gets energy to stay awake. In such a situation, calories increase in the body, which can increase the blood sugar level. Due to this, sleep is also disturbed. Lack of sleep can increase obesity, which increases the risk of type 2 diabetes. It can affect anyone.
