Strong protests are continuing in the case of rape and murder of a lady doctor in Kolkata. Every day new revelations are being made about the brutality done with the female doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. But today we will tell you how much the cases of violence against women have increased in West Bengal.

The postmortem report of the female doctor who was raped and murdered in Kolkata states that she had to face penetration several times. Not only this, but injury marks have also been found on the body of the female doctor. The report shows how brutally the sexual crime was committed with her.

Violence against women in Kolkata

According to the NCRB report of the year 2023, an increase in crime against women was recorded. But the crime rate in the city was low. Kolkata has recorded a rise in crimes against women, as the number of cases rose from 1,783 in 2021 to 1,890 in 2022. The crime rate against women in Kolkata was reported to be 27.1 per lakh population. There were 11 rape incidents in Kolkata in 2021, which is equal to 2020. But there were 14 rape cases in 2018 and less than 15 rape cases in 2017. According to the NCRB report, in the year 2021, 45 cases of murder, 135 cases of attempted murder, 11 cases of rape, 127 cases of assault on women, 3 cases of robbery and 1246 cases of theft were registered in Kolkata. Although the report did not show a decrease in the rates of crimes against women, but in view of the increasing crimes, people are questioning these figures.

Violence in West Bengal

Let us tell you that during the year 2021, the highest number of cases of domestic violence by husbands and in-laws against women were registered in West Bengal. This has been revealed in the report of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). According to the NCRB, 19,952 cases were registered in the state in 2021 under Section 498A of the Indian Penal Code. This section is also called anti-dowry law, under which action is taken against violence against women by the husband and in-laws.

After West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh was in second place with 18,375 cases, while Rajasthan was in third place. 16,949 cases were registered under this section last year. Goa is at the bottom of this list, where only one case of domestic violence was reported in 2021. While in Sikkim only two complaints were registered under this section.
