Nimesulide Banned on Animals: To save the endangered vultures, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has banned Nimesulide and its formulations for the treatment of animals. Now this medicine will neither be made for animals, nor will it be distributed or used. The ministry gave this information on 30 December 2024.
Actually, Nimesulide is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It is used in the treatment of pain, swelling, fever and respiratory system infections in animals. If an animal dies during treatment, it is thrown away. Vultures and other creatures that eat their dead bodies even die.
Many medicines have been banned earlier also
Many medicines have already been banned to protect vultures. The use of diclofenac sodium has been banned in 2006 and the use of ketoprofen and aceclofenac formulations in 2023. Multi-dose vials of diclofenac sodium, used in humans, were also banned in 2012 because it was being used in animals. Now only single dose vial is available for humans in the market.
What is the reason for the ban?
According to experts, in the 1980s the number of vultures in India used to be in crores. By 1990, 99 percent of the vulture population had vanished. 10 years passed before we found this out. After this, when the causes of death came to light, demands began to be raised to ban such medicines in the country. The government is banning these medicines one by one.
Do side effects occur only on vultures?
Experts say that due to the use of such medicine in animals, its side effects have been seen not only on vultures but also on other birds and animals that eat the meat of those dead animals. The ministry also believes that many safe alternatives to these medicines like Malaxicam are also available in the market. Efforts are being made to preserve animals by promoting them and banning such medicines.
