You would think that video calling would have started when the best smartphones came into the market. However, it is not so. Actually, the first video call took place much earlier on June 30, 1970. This call took place between Pittsburgh Mayor Peter Flaherty and Alcoa Chairman and CEO John Harper.
However, these video calls were not like the ones we do today. It is said that no smartphone was used to make this video call, rather a small device named Picturephone Mod II was used for this.

We speak in Hindi on video calls several times a day. But till date we do not know what video call is called in Hindi. When we searched about it on Google, most of the places we found video call written in Hindi as Chalchitra Telephone. Actually, it was discovered abroad and the people there called it video call. This is the reason why people of India also call it video call. However, it is spoken in different languages in China, Korea and Japan. For example, in Chinese it is called Shīpín diànhuà.
