An important decision has been taken by the University Grants Commission (UGC) regarding MPhil. In the decision, the UGC has asked the universities to take action against not taking admissions from the session 2024-25. Also, UGC has also advised the candidates who were planning to take admission in MPhil program to be cautious. After the decision of UGC, people who already have MPhil degree are confused. They want to know what effect this decision will have on their old degree? Can job seekers face some problems? 

What did UGC say?

UGC Chairman Prof. According to M Jagadish Kumar, the Commission has asked the universities to take immediate steps to stop admission for the 2024-25 session. Whereas, UGC Secretary Prof. Manish R. Joshi  In the notice issued by it, it has been said that some universities are inviting applications for MPhil (Master of Philosophy) programme. In such a situation, they are being told that MPhil is not a recognized degree. Regulation No. 14 has also been cited in this notice, in which it is clearly stated that Higher Education Institutes cannot offer MPhil programme.

What will happen to those who are already working?

Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University, Kanpur Vice Chancellor Prof. Vinay Kumar Pathak says that it is wrong to comment on the government’s decision. However, he believes that those who have done M.Phil earlier will be considered and new ones will not be considered. What will be the impact on those who have already got jobs after doing MPhil? On this question Vice Chancellor Prof. Vinay Kumar Pathak said that he does not think it will make any difference. Earlier it was recognized, now it is not.

What will happen to those who get degrees now?

At the same time, Shivaji Sarkar, who is a professor in IIMC, says that this decision will not affect those who have already done MPhil and are doing jobs. Those who do MPhil after the decision of UGC (which is the date in the circular), it is difficult for them to get benefits in job. Rest also depends on the employing organization. However, it is not right now to say officially what will happen or what not.
