The most popular among the fraud messages sent to people on WhatsApp is the message about winning a prize. Criminals send messages on people’s WhatsApp that you’ve won a prize! Along with such messages, a link or something like a lucky draw is sent and users are asked to click on this link to win their lucky draw and get a prize worth lakhs of rupees.
Many people fall into such fake and false scams and then click on that link. Many times, through that link, scammers copy many important data present in the user’s phone, after which the user has to face a lot of loss.
Job notification message
There is a huge phase of unemployment going on in India at present. In this country, crores of people are in search of employment every day and cyber criminals take advantage of this. They send job offers to people through WhatsApp. The offer is so attractive that a person who has been looking for a new job for months immediately falls into the trap of that fake job and clicks on the link sent by the scammers.
By clicking such links, your mobile data can go to someone else’s mobile or system. Scammers allow people to fill up genuine looking forms of any fake company, asking for a lot of your information. Users fill them and submit and the complete information goes to the scammers. Apart from this, scammers also lure job seekers to get a job by depositing some money.
Fraud through bank alert
Apart from these two methods, another scary method is bank alert. Scammers send WhatsApp messages to common people in the form of bank alerts, after seeing which it seems that the message has actually come from the bank. In this message, scammers say that you will have to get your bank account KYC done as soon as possible, otherwise your account will be closed, or some money will be deducted from it.
A link to do fake KYC is also given in the message and a phone number is given so that the user can call the scammer himself out of fear. In this way too, scammers steal the mobile details or personal details of common users and defraud them of money.
How to avoid such fraud
Scammers keep sending messages in these ways, and scammers always keep adopting different and new methods to cheat and defraud through WhatsApp or any online medium. Their only objective is to steal money from the users’ accounts. For this reason, every user should not click on any unknown link coming through WhatsApp or any other app nor should contact those numbers. If users suspect someone of cheating or trying to cheat, then they can directly complain to the Central Government team through Chakshu, the portal recently launched by the Government of India.
