Whatsapp payment feature: Whatsapp is constantly increasing features for its 3.5 billion users by adding new features. Now there are reports that this messaging app owned by META may soon offer the facility to pay electricity, water and other bills in India. With this, Whatsapp will not be limited to UPI transactions, but can become a compost digital payment platform.
Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm will get a tough competition
This new bill of WhatsApp will save the payment feature users from the need to use many different apps. This feature will compete directly with payment apps like Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm.
According to Leaks, this feature has been seen in Android beta version 2.25.3.15 of Whatsapp. However, it is currently in testing phase and its official launch date has not been fixed.
According to media reports, users will be able to pay electricity, water, mobile recharge, fare and other bills with this feature. This will benefit those people who use many different platforms for their domestic expenses.
Whatsapp Pay and UPI-based payment service
This new feature of Whatsapp will be associated with the already available UPI-based Whatsapp Pay System. Currently, friends, family or traders can be paid through UPI through Whatsapp Pay.
Whatsapp Pay was launched in India in 2020, but in the initial days it was made available only for some limited users. Recently, NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India) has approved WhatsApp to expand UPI services for all Indian users.
Whatsapp status in digital payment market
The UPI payment market in India is currently dominated by PhonePe and Google Pay. Until November 2024.
- PhonePeβs market share was 47.8%.
- Google Pay had 37% market share.
Other competitors include Paytm, Navi, Cred and Amazon Pay.
After the launch of the new feature of WhatsApp, it will be interesting to see how big it makes a big change in digital payment space and whether it is able to overtake companies like Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm.
