When Amitabh Bachchan Asked Father Harivansh Rai Bachchan Aapne Mujhe Paida Kyun Kiya

Amitabh Bachchan Remembers His Father: Veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan often remembers his father poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan on his television show ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’. Remembering the life lessons his late father taught him, Big B often shares the memories he shared with his father.

Now once again Big has remembered his father. Recalling the days of his youth on his blog, Amitabh Bachchan told that once he had asked his father, ‘Why did you give birth to us? In a June 2008 blog, Big B recalled his inner indecisiveness while talking about his newfound freedom after finishing his schooling.

Used to worry about the future

He wrote about a special kind of “despair” that comes with feeling “the added pressure of the future”. “The anger of not knowing what to do with myself,” he wrote. In this anger, a young Amitabh once entered his father’s room and questioned him. He recalled, “Angry, frustrated, strong and full of unwarranted thoughts I went into my father’s study one evening and for the first time in my life, with choked feelings, raised my voice at him and shouted – you child. Why did you give birth to me? Why did you give birth to us?”

He further recalled, “My father, as always immersed in his writing, looked at me with some initial astonishment and then settled into a more understanding posture and remained so almost to eternity. When no one said anything, Amitabh left the room. He said that it was “an uncomfortable night” for him.

Father replied with poetry

Big B recalled that the next morning, his father woke him up, and gave him a piece of paper with a poem written on it – New Leak. Harivansh Rai Bachchan wrote a poem to answer Amitabh’s question. Big B translated the poem on his blog and part of it reads, “My sons ask me – why did you give birth to us? And I don’t have the answer. That even my father didn’t ask me before giving birth to me. Nor did my father ask his father before begetting him. Nor did my grandfather ask his father before bringing them. At the end of the poem, his father shows him a new direction and how he can change the way the world is.

He wrote, ‘Why don’t you make a new beginning, a new thinking, ask your sons before giving birth.’ Amitabh then summarized the poem in conclusion and wrote, “There are no excuses and no blame in life. Every morning is a new challenge. Either you learn to take up the challenge and learn to fight or you learn to surrender to it. When Till there is life, there is struggle!
