Love is the most beautiful feeling in a person’s life. But at one time this feeling was seen as a disease. This was the era of the 11th century. In this era, there were many writers and doctors who saw love as a disease and also told its treatment. Let us tell you in this article today why love was seen as a disease in that era and how it was treated.
Love was a disease
Constantine African was a doctor in the 11th century. He believed that love is a disease which occurs due to excess of some black substance in the body. Constantine believed that this disease directly affects the human mind and creates stressful thoughts and anxiety in the mind of the sick person. Similarly, in Boissier’s novel The Sauvage, love was seen as a disease which creates sadness in a person. Whereas, some doctors of that era even believed that love is such a fatal disease that it can even take the life of the patient.
Apart from doctors, some writers also saw love as a disease. Garcilaso de la Vega was one such writer. In his books, he depicted love as a disease that can lead to madness and death. Whereas when you see the main character Liriano of writer Diego de San Pedro’s Prison of Love written in 1492, he is also found to be suffering from the disease called love.
Treatment of love
The psychologists, writers and doctors who saw love as a disease also told the treatment of this disease. In that era, this disease was cured by two methods. The first method was diet. That is, if a person is suffering from the disease of love, then he was given a sattvik diet. That is, the person was kept away from alcohol, meat, eggs and any kind of food which is hot in nature and which makes one feel heavy after going into the stomach.
Actually, the doctors of that era believed that this kind of food increases blood circulation inside a person and this increases sexual desires. At the same time, patients suffering from love were given fish and vinegar to eat. While, the other method was moral discipline.
