When the color of light coming from the Sun is white, then why is the shadow black? Know the science behind it

Whenever we come in front of the light, we leave behind a shadow. A dark streak. The shadow is also long and wide according to our height. But have you ever wondered that when the color of light coming from the Sun is white, then why is the shadow black? If it is said that light cannot penetrate a human being or any object, that is why it happens. Then water is transparent, why does it form a shadow? There is interesting science behind this.

First of all, how are we able to see something? The answer is, when rays of light fall on something, that thing, according to its nature, absorbs some part of the light and reflects the remaining part. When this reflected light reaches your eyes then you are able to see the object. This entire process takes very little time.

how does a ray of light move
Now suppose that rays of light are coming from a small light source like a torch light and falling on a wall. What will happen if something solid is placed in between it? Some rays of light will emerge from the edges of the object and reach the wall. Some rays will bounce back after hitting the object and will not reach the wall. The rays which do not reach the wall, leave behind a vacuum, which we consider as a shadow. The shadow is black because there is no light in that part of the wall, through which any light can reach our eyes. That’s why we see the shadow as black.

Then why is shadow formed on water?
Then why is shadow formed on water? Engineer named Gokul Bhardwaj in NTPC answered this. Said, take water in a glass. If the glass is empty then very little reflection will be visible. But if water is poured into it, a black shadow will be seen forming. However, it will also be blurry and not completely black like the solid object. Water and glass both are transparent medium. When the glass was empty, the light passed first through air and then through glass, then through glass and then through air. But as soon as you filled the glass with water, the light first passed through air, then glass, then water and then air. That’s why it becomes a little blurry.
