Can a human being eat another human being’s flesh to survive? You may feel bad thinking about this, but when their lives are at risk, people do not shy away from doing this. One such accident happened on October 13, 1972, when a Uruguayan Air Force plane met with an accident amidst the Andes mountains. During that time, the survivors of the accident had to live in those snowy hills without food for 72 days. This accident is famous in history as ‘Miracle of Andes’ and ‘Andes Flight Disaster’. During this time, the 16 survivors had saved their lives with great difficulty. To save himself, he even ate the dead bodies of people killed in accidents. Now 70 year old Robert Canessa, who survived this accident, has expressed his views regarding the accident.

Robert Canessa has said that the choice of eating the dead body was not easy, but we had no other option. He said, ‘If I had died in that accident, I would have also wanted the survivors to save themselves by eating my body.’ While talking to Daily Mail, Canessa said that I chose the path of keeping myself alive and I am proud of what I did during that time. Canessa has also mentioned this entire accident in his book. He said that we continued to bear the pain for a long time. I went out into the snow and prayed to God for guidance. Let us tell you that Kanesa was a medical student at the time of the accident. He was the one who told other people to stay alive by eating dead bodies. Canessa further said that the idea of eating human flesh was absolutely horrifying. Earlier, while talking to The Times, another survivor Ramon Sabella had said that it was very difficult to put it in the mouth. But out of compulsion we did it.

How did this accident happen?
In 1972, i.e. 52 years ago, the Uruguayan Air Force plane was passing over the Andes Mountains carrying the players and officials of the rugby team along with their family and friends. A total of 45 people were on board the plane. Shortly after the plane took off, the weather started worsening. Because of this, the pilot could not see the snowy mountains and the plane flying at an altitude of 14 thousand feet collided directly with the Andes Mountains. After this accident, most of the people on the flight died, only 27 people were left alive. However, even the survivors did not see any hope of survival. In such a situation, two players of the rugby team, Nando Parrado and Robert Canessa, did not give up. Due to this passion to stay alive, he not only saved himself but also succeeded in saving 14 other people.

Government became active immediately after the accident

As soon as the information about the plane hitting the Andes was received, the Uruguayan government immediately became active and started a rescue operation to save them. However, the color of the plane was white, so it was very difficult to find it in the snowy mountains. The rescue operation continued for 11 days, but when no clue was found, it was called off. But the difficulties of the survivors increased day by day. Initially, they divided the available food into small portions, but when it ran out, they started eating pieces of the bodies of their own comrades who had died in the accident.

72 days of struggle, survived again
A total of 27 people survived the plane crash, but 11 gradually died. Only 16 people were left. All of them were waiting for death. In such a situation, Nando Parrado and Robert Canessa set out in search of help. Despite being weak, he showed amazing courage. Trekked for 12 days and reached the populated area of Chile, where both of them informed the rescue team about the location of their companions. The remaining survivors were also brought alive from the location indicated by them. In this way, both these players, along with saving their lives, also proved to be angels for their teammates.
