AC: If you are thinking of buying a new air conditioner (AC), then you must have seen 3 star or 5 star rating in many models. In this article, we will tell you which AC can be best for you according to your needs. If you buy AC without complete information, then you may suffer a loss.
The real story of AC
Generally it is said that the more stars, the more electricity savings. It is true that the more stars, the more electricity savings, but in reality, the savings are not as much as we expect.
There was a time when AC was not considered a necessity but a luxury item. If there was an AC in the house, then everyone from the neighbourhood to distant relatives would know about it. Earlier only white coloured ACs were available but now colourful and designer ACs have also started coming, but one question still remains the same that how many star rating AC should be purchased.
What does 5 stars and 3 stars mean?
The number of stars to be put in an AC (air conditioner) is decided by the government’s Bureau of Energy Efficiency, which is known as BEE in short. It works to give ratings to electric products. From fans to ACs and refrigerators, all get ratings between 1 to 5 stars. These stars tell how much electricity a product can save.
If you buy a 3 star AC, it will be more beneficial, because from July 2022, a new rating has been implemented, in which 1 star has been reduced, which means that 4 star has now become 3 star. First of all, look at the difference in price. There is a difference of about 10 thousand rupees between a 5 star and a 3 star AC. This means that you will have to spend 10 thousand rupees extra to buy a new AC.
How much difference is there in the budget?
If we look at the difference in unit consumption, then there is a difference of only 34 units in a month. This can be understood by an example. If you buy a 5 star AC and charge Rs 5 per unit, then 34*5 = Rs 170 per month. If you use the AC for 8 months in a year, then you will save only Rs 1360 (170 * 8). This means that to buy a 5 star AC, you have to spend Rs 10,000 extra as compared to a 3 star AC, but the electricity savings in a year are only around Rs 1,500 or 2,000.
So if your AC is used for only 7 to 8 hours and that too only in summer months, then a 3 star AC will prove to be more useful for you. However, if you use the AC for 12 to 14 or 18 hours continuously every day for 8-9 months, then a 5 star AC can be beneficial for you.
