Cervical cancer cases are increasing rapidly every year in India. This cancer occurs especially in women. Indian women are diagnosed with cervical cancer in advanced stages. The reason behind this could also be that most women are not as aware about this cancer as they should be. Due to which this disease is detected in the very last stage.
Cervical cancer outbreak in India
Cervical cancer is more scary for India because 25 percent of its patients are from India alone. Its cases are continuously increasing every year. This cancer is caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. This virus is also called HIV, Syphilis, Chlamydia, Gonorrhea. The risk of this disease also increases due to smoking and poor immunity. The World Health Organization has set a target of controlling this cancer by the year 2030. It is thought to eliminate this cancer through vaccination, screening and proper treatment. But it is a matter of concern that in India, when cervical cancer is detected in a woman, it is detected at a very advanced stage.
Screening and treatment
The Papanicolaou (Pap) test is usually used to detect abnormalities or precancerous cells (dysplasia). Early stage cancer can be detected through this. HPV virus can also be detected through Pap test. For this, Pap and HPV tests are done. Doctors check women for precancerous cells at regular intervals in which dysplasia can be treated, thus helping to cure the cancer.
Cervical biopsy: Using a colposcope, a small piece of the selected cervix is removed for examination.
Endocervical Curettage Screening of tissues is done from inside the cervix.
Deaths due to cancer can be effectively prevented by screening for cervical cancer. This screening is done at an interval of three to five years. Screening starts from the age of 21 to 25 years. It can be stopped after the age of 65 years, if the last 3 reports are normal.
If they want to avoid cervical cancer, women must get these tests done like Pap smear and HPV test. Through this test, if there is any change in the cervix, it can be easily detected.
