Two things are possible with old satellites

So that it comes out of the orbit and falls towards the earth. As soon as it comes into the atmosphere, its speed becomes so fast that due to friction it burns and gets destroyed.

If the satellite is in Earth’s outer orbit
The second situation is that if the satellite is in the outer orbit of the Earth, that is, it is not so easy to bring it into the Earth’s atmosphere, then it is sent further away from the Earth. So that it leaves the Earth’s orbit and goes out. Such satellites disappear into space forever. These can never be searched again. Because it is an impossible task to contact them. It takes less fuel to blast satellites far into space than to send them back to Earth.
