Why do companies claim to kill 99.9% germs? How does bacteria always survive?

Apart from mosquitoes, if there is anything else in the world that cannot be eradicated, it is germs. Perhaps this is the reason why big companies always claim to kill 99.9% of germs in their disinfectants. You would never have seen any company claiming that its product kills 100 percent germs. However, it is worth thinking that how does the last germ always survive?

In this matter, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Center for Disease Control (CDC) have made some guidelines. These guidelines are based on measuring the effects of disinfectants and setting their limits. According to this, it is almost impossible to completely eliminate germs. This is because bacteria and viruses can be active even in very small numbers.

What is mathematics?

Logarithmic decay pattern works behind the elimination of germs, due to which no company ever claims to kill 100 percent germs. Suppose if a colony of 100 germs doubles every hour, then after 24 hours their population will exceed 1.5 billion. However, when it comes to killing them, the logarithmic decay pattern works. According to this, if a disinfectant kills 90 percent of the bacteria every minute, then after one minute only 10 percent of the bacteria will survive. In the next minute, 10 percent of the remaining 10 percent will be saved. This sequence will continue further. Due to this pattern, it will never be possible to claim that 100 percent of the germ population can be eliminated.

Winter and heat also play an important role

Germs or bacteria grow more in cold places. That means this weather is favorable for them. In such a situation, if you apply disinfectant on a cold surface and immediately wipe it with a cloth, it is not necessary that most of the germs are eliminated. However, the opposite happens in hot weather. This means that more and more germs can be eliminated in hot weather.
