According to the information, the use of the V sign for victory sign is often associated with former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. However, this symbol actually appeared for the first time in Belgium. It was used by tennis star Victor de Lavelle.

According to the information, in 1940, Victor de Lavelle was appointed the official presenter of Radio Belgium in London. During his broadcasts, he became a symbol of independent Belgium. A year later, he asked all Belgians to adopt the letter V as a rallying sign. Because V is the first letter of Victoire (victory) in French and Vrijheid (freedom) in Flemish. After Victor’s appeal, this symbol was widely used in January 1941. Residents of Belgium, Netherlands and Northern France also got it made on buildings in defiance of the Nazis. At the same time, British wartime leader Winston Churchill saw the success of this symbol and decided to use it during a speech on television. After this, he used it throughout the war. Later, this V started being used all over the world as a victory sign.
