What is silent stroke?
No serious changes or special symptoms are seen in silent stroke. Such as facial paralysis, paralysis of hands or speech. Silent stroke, also known as “asymptomatic cerebral infarction”. This happens when blood does not reach a small area of the brain properly. Or blood supply stops. Still, no specific symptoms are seen in this type of stroke. This blockage causes brain cell damage. Often people are not able to recognize it.
Causes of silent stroke
The risk factors and causes of silent stroke are the same as those of symptomatic stroke. Understanding these risk factors is important for prevention.
High BP: This is the main cause of both silent and major stroke. High arterial pressure can damage the blood capillaries of the brain. Due to which the possibility of clot formation increases.
Diabetes: Diabetes increases the risk of damage to blood vessels and arteries. Due to which the chances of stroke are higher.
High cholesterol: High cholesterol levels contribute to fatty deposits in the arteries, which can eventually lead to blockage.
Smoking: Smoking damages blood vessels and increases high blood pressure. Due to which the risk of stroke increases significantly.
Heart disease: Conditions such as atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat) can result in blood clots and stroke.
Obesity: Being overweight, especially around the abdomen, is related to an increased risk of stroke due to comorbidities such as high blood pressure and diabetes.
Age and gender: Silent stroke can occur at any age, but its risk increases with increasing age. Men are more likely to suffer from stroke. Whereas its serious consequences are seen in women.
Silent stroke or silent cerebral infarction (SCI) has no obvious symptoms. However, there may be some signs, such as:
Decreased muscle mobility, especially difficulty toileting
mood swings
change in personality
