It is believed that in Ramayana, when Ravana was going to Lanka after abducting Mother Sita, he encountered Jatayu. After which there was a war between them. It fell on a mountain top of Chadayamangalam after being killed by the mythical bird Ravana in battle. Jatayu fought valiantly with Ravana to save Sita Mata, but being old he could not stop Ravana and Ravana killed him. The idol is situated on top of a hill at the same place where he breathed his last after informing Lord Rama about the abduction.
