This child is a three-parent baby

Scientists prepared IVF embryos by taking tissue from eggs of a healthy woman. In this embryo, the biological parents’ sperm and eggs’ mitochondria (the power house of the cell) were mixed together. In addition to the DNA of the parents, 37 genes were inserted into the child’s body from the genetic material of a third female donor. That is, in fact it is a three-parent baby. However, 99.8 percent of the DNA is from the parents only.

The aim was to prevent genetic diseases

MDT is also called MRT i.e. Mitochondrial Replacement Treatment. This method has been developed by the doctors of England. This child has also been born at the Newcastle Fertility Center in England. About one child out of every 6 thousand in the world is suffering from mitochondrial diseases, ie serious genetic diseases. The scientific motive behind making this child was that the genetic diseases of the parents should not be transferred to the child.

What is the process of MDT?

First of all, the eggs of the mother are fertilized with the help of the sperm of the father. After that nuclear genetic material is extracted from the eggs of another healthy woman and mixed with the fertilized eggs of the parents. After this, the mitochondria of a healthy woman gets affected on this egg. After all this it is installed in the embryo. A lot of care has to be taken in this process and from the point of view of medical science, there are many challenges and dangers in this process.
