The new year used to start from the first of March.
It is not that always the new year used to start from January 1. It started from 15 October 1582. It used to start from the month of March in the first year. Later, Numa Pompilus, the king of Rome, made necessary changes in the Roman calendar and the month of January was included in the calendar and it was considered as the first month of the year. Earlier there used to be only 10 months in this calendar starting from March till December. Because of which only 310 days were considered in a year at that time.
Who started the new year from January?
It is said that the Roman ruler Julius Caesar started the new year from January 1. When Julius Caesar met astronomers, he came to know that the Earth revolves around the Sun in 365 days and six hours. Keeping this in mind, 12 months were made in a year and 365 days instead of 310.
After this, in the year 1582 itself, Pope Gregory found a slight mistake regarding the leap year in the Julius calendar. During that time, famous religious teacher St. Bede told that a year is not of 365 days 6 hours, but of 365 days 5 hours and 46 seconds. Keeping this in mind, later a new calendar was prepared by changing the Roman calendar and since then the tradition of celebrating the new year started from January 1.
