ZSI Animal Taxonomy Summit 2024: The Zoological Survey of India was established on 1 July 1916. Today is 1 July and the 109th year of the establishment of the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI). And for this, India’s Union Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav reached Kolkata to attend the summit.
Giving this information at the Animal Taxonomy Summit 2024, organized annually by the Zoological Survey of India, Union Minister Bhupendra Yadav said that 1,04,561 species have been covered in India. And with this, India has become the first and only country in the world to make a list of all living creatures.
There are more than 1 lakh species in India
Union Environment Minister of the Government of India Bhupendra Yadav also attended the Animal Taxonomy Summit 2024 organized by the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) in Kolkata. First, he praised the country for its biodiversity conservation. Speaking, the Union Minister said, ‘India is a global champion in terms of biodiversity conservation. The tradition, ethos and values of our country respect nature and promote biodiversity conservation.’
After this, while talking about the checklist of animals, he said that ‘India has covered 104,561 species of animals. India has prepared a checklist of all the animals. With this, India has also become the first country in the world to do so.’ Along with this, he further said that ‘India is proving itself as the world’s leader in biodiversity documentation.’
Portal released
During the Animal Taxonomy Summit 2024 held at the Vishwa Bangla Convention Center in Kolkata, Union Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav also launched the checklist portal of the fauna of India. The name ‘Fauna of India Checklist Portal’ is the first portal of its kind. It includes all the fauna species found in India.
For this, a total of 121 checklists have been included for 36 types of phyla based on different and well-known classifications. These include some organisms whose species are in danger. At the same time, some that already exist have also been included.
